Movie music?

People who cringe at concert works that presumably sound like “movie music” completely miss the point. The reason that movie soundtracks are not viable in concert halls has nothing to do with their musical language and everything to do with the fact that they are designed to supplement the narrative that is primarily told through the visual means and the dialogue and thus the music of a soundtrack lacks its own coherent narrative that is sine qua non of concert music. If a piece combines the direct appeal and accessibility of a movie soundtrack and a coherent purely musical narrative, as far as I am concerned, we’ve got the best of both worlds.
